Here's the next installment of our family's blog updates.
One of the biggest blessings of living in the DC area for the last few years is that my little sister Alyson and her family lived only two hours (sometimes four hours, depending on traffic) away. We have loved being able to take regular weekends and go down to visit them.
Unfortunately, Nate (Alyson's husband) decided to graduate medical school and start a residency program in Oklahoma. They didn't even ask our permission before they made this rash decision. I know ... the gall, right?!
Seriously, we are thrilled for all of them to start this new phase in life. Nate has worked his tail off and earned an amazing residency in a highly competitive program. We are sad they are moving so far away, but that's life.
For Nate's graduation, we were able to travel down for the weekend of May 21st to tell him congrats and spend one more weekend of fun together. Here are some pics from our trip.
Nate's parents and my parent's also came for the weekend. Here's a picture of my mom showing the kids a robot dog toy that I had when I was a young toddler. The dog was a huge hit, and Elli still loves to play with it almost every day.
Saturday was a beautiful day, and so we took some time to play on a large field of grass near Alyson's home.
Elli sure is going to miss her cousins!
We also took advantage of our time there to go see a family historical site. Robert Rose, an ancestor on my mom's side, used to be a preacher at a famous church in Richmond. In fact, it was at this church that Patrick Henry gave his famous "Give me liberty or give me death" speech during the lead-up to the Revolutionary War in 1775. Robert had already passed away at that point, but he was one of the first preachers at this same church and the first one to be buried there.
So here we are, getting in touch with our roots.
Robert was buried in a very prominent spot in the church cemetery.
Heather was very thoughtful and vandalized the only flowering bush nearby, tearing a beautiful blossom from its innocent branches, and left it on Robert's gravesite.
It was a pretty comical scene. Alyson, Mom, and I were reading the grave stone and taking in the serene surroundings when we suddenly heard what sounded like a full-on assault on this bush. We all turned around and to our amazement, we see Heather going to town on a branch of this bush. We all started laughing and could barely compose ourselves enough to ask Heather what she was doing. Finally, after 10 or so minutes, she conquered the bush and placed her prize on the grave site. It was really funny.

Love all the cousin pics. It is nice that you have had some family so close by. The grass photos are really cute. The one with Elli's hands in the air looks like she just finished a fabulous gymnastics trick!
The flower story on the grave is so Heather! That's hilarious. The stained glass in that church is beautiful.
