Holiday Trip to UAE Part 4: Dubai

The last part of our holiday trip to the UAE was spent in Dubai, which was a close 1.5 hour drive from Abu Dhabi.  There was way too much to do for one day, but we narrowed it down to four main things. First was the water taxi, which took us to the old portion of the town where the gold and spice souks (outdoor shops) were.  Safety was not the top priority of this taxi, which was not wider than my body laying down.  It had no side rails and it was crammed full of people.  Of course, we didn't hesitate to jump right on board, and not having side rails actually made it easier to get on/off with the big stroller.  So it all worked out well!
The view of the city from the river was fascinating.  It showed an interesting contrast between old world and new.

On the other side of the river were the souks.  We had a great time meandering through all the stores, and we bought some fun items.  Elli got a skirt full of coins that jingles when she moves and Sienna bought a small camel whose hump opens to store small items.  Heather also bought a beautiful serving dish that was hand painted.  We also bought some myrrh for when we do the Christmas nativity next year.  Never seen that spice before.

Next we made our way to the old Dubai fort, which has since been converted into a museum.  It was a very well done museum, although we only got pictures of the outside.

Finally, we ended the day at the world's largest mall, which is right next to the world's largest building, the Burj Khalifa.  Impressive building, especially at night when they have the water fountain show.  Awesome mall, too, with a huge ice rink, aquarium, and tons of other things we did not have time to explore.  Great day, great friends, great city.
